One of the toughest female rappers in Zambia, Clementina Mulenga Masengu, popularly known as Cleo Ice Queen, has finally dropped her long-awaited debut album titled ‘I Am Her’. The release of this album was rescheduled due to the mourning period for the late former president of the Republic of Zambia, Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Cleo Ice Queen has been active in the industry for over a decade now. She started rapping at the age of 11. She has released two successful albums and collaborated with both local and international artists. She was signed to international labels such as Def Jam Records. She gained national recognition after she participated in the eighth season of the reality television series Big Brother Africa, which was produced by Endemol for M-Net. She became the first Zambian artist to participate in season 2 of Coke Studio.
Cleo Ice Queen’s latest album, ‘I Am Her,’ comprises eleven songs, and it is probably her last album this year. The artists featured on the album include Sizwe Alakine, Tim, Tiwah Hillz, Gigi Lamayne, 76 Drums, Dizmo, Slapdee, Dope Boys, Yo Maps, Caitlin De Ville, James Sakala, and Jae Cash. Moreover, this album has leading songs such as ‘Ma Pressure’, ‘I Am Her’, ‘Ma Zale’, and ‘Keep Going (KALE)’. Hip-hop in Zambia is subjective, but artists like Slapdee, Chef 187, Tommy Dee, Smaq, Macky 2, and Mubby Roux are widely considered among the country’s top and most influential rappers. It’s good to see how the Zambian music industry has grown, with new artists promising to make it big in the music industry.
